Sacramento Book Collectors Club, September 11, 2009 Brooke Boyer, a serious gaming expert (not the gambling type) is the special guest presenter for the Sacramento Book Collectors Club first meeting of the 2009-2010 season, on Friday, September 11, 2009, at 7 pm at Arden-Dimick Library on Watt Avenue. Brooke Boyer comes with a service background with double-duty in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy, in health care as a medic, corpsman, and as part of the "Psychiatric Reaction Team" in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, in the 1980s and 1990s. He earned in Baccalaureate in Fine Arts in Theatre at Denver University and completed his RN as part of his Naval Training at George Washington University. More recently his career has taken him into psychiatric health care including in correctional settings. All of the above logically developed his interets in Military History as background to "Board War Games," role-playing games, Olympic-style > fencing (saber), historical fencing (rapier, dagger, saber), and books on all these topics plus fantasy writing. Brooke and his wife Lauren serve as King & Queen of the Turlock Renaissance Fair (for six years), which provides a venue to hone a number of these interests. Brooke Boyer will introduce us to board games, some of which developed into books (such as Tom Clancey's interest in the game "Harpoon" as inspiration for his "Hunt for Red October" and "Red Storm Rising"; and vice versa as some books ended up as games (such as Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code" developing into a whole plethora of games). He will take us from early pre-computer board games, into computer games and role-playing games. Members and Guests are invited to bring a sample of their own books on games, or games from books, to share in this festival of games for what will be an interesting evening. |
